about the yellow light magazine

the yellow light magazine (ylm) was founded in 2022 and is based mostly in Boston and partially in Seattle. ylm was founded by joy and molly, friends since 2017 and forever college roommates, who have always bonded over their appreciation for, and creation of their own, art. from their first shared playlist (thank you Carly Simon) to long nights spent editing articles side-by-side, they have grown up together -- and somehow grown into themselves.

joy and molly founded ylm after a year of self-exploration post-grad that found them meeting periodically in Boston, Seattle, and the south of France to discuss the confusing and exhilarating time that is early twenties. ylm is a digital collection of snippets of young adulthood -- from tear-soaked journal entries to pre-faded photos. ylm is a zine about growing up and breaking down. we hope you find the mag as healing as we have.

with a b.s. in journalism from Emerson College and experience in both the music and publishing industries, creating this outlet for art feels entirely natural - especially in the form of a zine.  my own twenties have been riddled with a pandemic, heartache, self-discovery, and lots of restlessness.  I've found refuge In knowing I'm not alone in these experiences, which is the philosophy of the yellow light.

wherever you go, you can't out run these years, so you may as well experience them at full volume.

when I'm not digging through old diaries and begging friends for notes app apology screenshots, I'm working as a publicist for musicians and freelancing as a writer in my little home by the sea.

i’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, and I’ve got the 2007 diary entries to prove it.

after graduating with a degree specializing in writing and literature, and spending a year abroad in the south of France, i’ve learned a lot about myself, especially with how i want to continue to create art outside of school.

crafting this zine has been so creatively fulfilling and I can’t wait to continue this project and watch it grow. when I’m not writing notes app poetry and drinking Red Bull Italian sodas, you can find me working as a copywriter and planning out my memoir.

visual creation, especially through photography, has been near to my heart my entire life. for my 10th birthday I received my first camera, a red Kodak m1033, and ever since then I've been creating worlds from behind a lens. my creation journey feels like a balancing act between learning rules and breaking them. having grown up right next to boston, I have a deep appreciation for muted palettes, quiet spectacles, and skylines that sleep.

when I'm not doodling or snapping photos you can find me drinking iced coffee, watching horror movies, or trying any food that doesn't have tomatoes in it.
